With the cooler current, between 14 and 20 degrees experienced between the months of May and August, the sardines start their migration up our coastline. The Southern African pilchard Sardinops sagax, commonly known as the Sardine, spawn in the waters of the Agulhas Bank and move north along our east coast. Shoals are often more than 7km long, 1.5km wide and 30 meters deep – the biggest shoal on earth.
Pockets have been sighted off south coast so it’s only a matter of days before they reach our shores.
