Municipal and third-party activities in the uMhlanga Precinct

March was a productive month across the uMhlanga precinct, with ongoing contributions from eThekwini Municipality departments, private contractors, and third-party service providers helping to maintain, improve, and secure the area.

Surfriders Restaurant Construction on the Promenade

Construction continues on the highly anticipated Surfriders restaurant, located on the Promenade at the Cabana Beach site. With visible progress underway, the opening is expected by end-April 2025. Temporary fencing remains in place for pedestrian safety while works continue.

Pier Lights Reassessment by Coastal Engineering

The reassessment of the Pier lights, conducted by Coastal Engineering, has been completed. We are hopeful this will lead to a resolution and restoration of reliable lighting in the area in the coming weeks.

End of the Forest Guides Learners Programme

The Council’s Learners Programme, which placed six youth as forest guides within uMhlanga’s coastal forest, officially concluded on 15 March. The UIP extends its sincere thanks to these learners for their support in conservation, education, and maintaining the natural integrity of the forest trails during their placement.

Metro Police to Take Over Village Green Clinic Building

A significant development for precinct safety is the upcoming transition of the old clinic building on Village Green to Metro Police, effective 1 April 2025. This increased Metro Police presence is expected to enhance law enforcement visibility and accessibility, positively impacting public safety and by-law enforcement in the area.

Crane Activity on Lagoon Drive

Over the past three weeks, Lagoon Drive has been impacted by crane erection activity linked to ongoing development. A stop-and-go system was implemented during this period to manage traffic. The crane installation is set to conclude by 21 April, after which traffic flow is expected to return to normal.

New Digital Screen for the Village

A digital screen will soon be installed on The Pearls building above Doppio Zero, bringing a dynamic new visual element to the Village precinct and enhancing the area’s modern appeal.

Ongoing Public Space Maintenance

No significant sewage-related issues were reported this month. Meanwhile, the Parks Department and UIP beach cleaning teams have worked daily to keep beaches clean, especially after periods of heavy rain.

Grass cutting remains an ongoing challenge due to the combination of rainfall and rapid vegetation growth, but all areas across the precinct have been attended to through joint efforts by Parks and the UIP.

Looking Ahead

As we transition into April, the UIP will continue to monitor and support infrastructure and safety improvements while keeping public spaces clean and accessible. Collaboration between municipal departments, private contractors, and the UIP remains essential in delivering a quality urban environment for all.
