From Saturday the 6th of February, the ‘Goby Beach Basket campaign’ begins. People in the area are encouraged to grab a basket from Goby at the Whalebone Pier, head to the beach, fill it with plastic and return to feed the 5m fish structure. A limited number of shopping baskets will be made available daily between 08h00 to 10h00 and 16h00 to 18h00.
If this part of the initiative is well received more baskets will be made available in the coming weeks during Goby’s stay until mid-April.
Launched in 2019 the Goby Environmental Project addresses the issue of plastic waste on KZN’s coastline while educating children and families on the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling waste and removing plastic waste from our beaches.
Goby has been with us since the 8 January and this week was emptied for a second time, amounting to 70kgs of plastic collected! With the new basket initiative in place we can now collect more plastic before Goby leaves in mid-April!
