Coastal clean-up and dune rehabilitation

Outside of the M4 cutback special project and routine tasks, the uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) have been focused on our beaches in the wake of recent weather. With the higher tides, storms and heavy rains, large tree trunks, branches, and other natural debris have washed up along uMhlanga’s coastline. The team has been actively involved in clearing these materials from the beach as part of our ongoing commitment to keeping the area clean, safe, and accessible for all.

Debris Removal and Safety

Our team has focused on removing large tree trunks and branches that were brought ashore during the storms. These debris not only clutter the beach but can also pose safety hazards for beachgoers. By clearing them away, we’re ensuring that residents and visitors can continue to enjoy uMhlanga’s beautiful beaches without obstruction.

Dune Rehabilitation

In addition to clearing the beach, the natural materials collected—such as tree trunks and branches—are being repurposed as part of our dune rehabilitation efforts. This initiative is crucial in maintaining the integrity of our coastal dunes, which serve as a natural barrier against future storm surges and help protect the coastline from erosion. By using the debris in this way, we are supporting the restoration of the dunes while promoting a sustainable approach to beach maintenance.

Repairing Pavers

With the heavy downpours, several sections of pavers have come moved or been washed away. Over the past few weeks the team have repaired pavers near the pier, village and various walkways.

Looking Ahead

As storms and high tides continue to affect the area, we remain vigilant in our efforts to keep the beach clean and the dunes healthy.
