Work continues in uMhlanga Rocks to clear the beaches

Despite good progress made following last week’s devastating floods, work continues in the uMhlanga UIP as more debris and waste washes up onto the beaches following high tides.

The uMhlanga UIP cleaning team is tackling the beaches between the lighthouse and Durban View Park while the city’s cleaning team cut and remove natural waste left on Main and Bronze Beaches.

A major beach clean-up supported by various stakeholders and the public was conducted in the precinct last week when heavy rains resulted in devastating floods across KZN.

uMhlanga UIP precinct manager Dewet Geldenhuys said: “The official beach clean-up ended on Friday however the UIP cleaning teams will continue with their efforts to remove rubbish.”

“We welcome any members of the public who’d like to assist to please join us and bring bags, closed shoes and gloves. Full bags can be deposited at one of our two skips located at the Whalebone Pier and behind the Main Beach stage,” he concluded.
