Storm damage update: Recovery efforts in uMhlanga

Following the storms that hit uMhlanga on the 13 January, recovery efforts continue in the precinct to bring it back to its original state.

Road Damage: Temporary road repairs have commenced on Newlands Drive toward Breakers Resort as of January 18th, 2024. However, due to extensive damage to infrastructure, power, and stormwater systems, this process may take some time. 76 Chartwell Drive toward the Village is currently closed off due to a sinkhole that has extended into the Western Property boundary. Sand deposited on Marine Drive has been removed, but repairs are ongoing and will require a lengthy process.

Building Damage: Hawaan View Complex on Lagoon Drive experienced fallen walls and basement flooding, with cars trapped and damaged. Repairs have begun, with most vehicles removed and electrical substation replacement completed on January 19th, 2023. Efforts are still ongoing.

Outstanding Repairs by Roads Department: Paving in the Pier servitude area, Village pavers near Protea and Granada Centre, stormwater drains on Durban View Road and Ridge Road, and the sinkhole and sand in the basement of Beacon Rock are still awaiting repairs.

Water and Electrical Faults: All water and electrical faults have been logged and attended to by the relevant authorities.

Beach Cleanup: Debris collected from beaches has been removed to facilitate dune rehabilitation. The beaches are now open for public use.

As the UUIP, we appreciate your patience and understanding as we work tirelessly to address the aftermath of the storm and restore normalcy to our community.
