Service Delivery Snapshot: Lighting, Sewage Response and Road Markings in uMhlanga

Municipal Services

As part of our ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the uMhlanga precinct, the UIP continues to engage with various eThekwini Municipality departments to address infrastructure, safety, and cleanliness ahead of the festive season.

Wastewater Management and Beach Monitoring

During October, two pumpstation failures and several minor sewage spills were reported in the precinct, primarily due to rags in the system. These incidents were escalated for urgent response and are being actively monitored. As a result, both beaches were temporarily closed for a nine-day period, but have since been reopened following acceptable water quality test results. Importantly, daily beach cleaning continued during this period, maintaining a hygienic and welcoming environment for all users.

Lighting and Safety Improvements

Weekly lighting audits were conducted by the eThekwini Electrical Department, with functionality currently at 95% along the Promenade and 91% across Village streetpole lights. These efforts are crucial in keeping public areas well-lit and safe. Metro Police maintained a visible daytime presence throughout October, and a noticeable reduction in traffic-related offences was reported. Plans are underway to bolster night-time by-law enforcement, in line with the Mayor’s call for improved compliance.

Parks Collaboration and Waste Management

The UIP, working closely with the Parks Department, continued to deliver on landscaping and litter control. A total of 601 refuse bags were removed from beaches and the Promenade during October. Parks’ scheduled grass cutting at Durban View Park and Hawaan added to the UIP’s own maintenance across the precinct. On the M4 corridor, two additional Servest staff and a forest cleaner were deployed, collecting 30 bags of rubbish and clearing stormwater drains of debris.

Infrastructure and Road Markings

In preparation for the upcoming festive period, a joint walkabout was conducted with the Parks Manager and Aquatic Beach Superintendent to assess public space needs and prioritise urgent repairs. A formal action plan will be presented at the upcoming FESMAC (Festive Season Management Committee) session.

Additionally, road marking improvements were completed by the Roads Department around the Village and greater precinct — ensuring safer navigation and better visibility for road users.

Signage and Vegetation Management

The street signage upgrade within and around the Village was also finalised by Council this month. In Flamingo Lane, Council and Oceans officially handed over the vegetation areas to the Parks Department and UIP, and the space is now under ongoing maintenance — with vegetation establishing well.

We remind members to continue to reporting faults on our online fault platform.
