Following heavy winds and rainfall earlier this October, the uMhlanga UIP teams shifted focus to precinct recovery and restoration, ensuring that green spaces, infrastructure, and beaches were quickly returned to their usual standard.
The storms damaged several aloes and low-lying branches across the area. In response, the UIP landscaping team removed hazardous branches, replanted affected garden beds and reinstated paving where stormwater runoff had caused damage. These efforts helped maintain the safety and visual appeal of the precinct in the lead-up to the festive season.

Debris and litter that washed up along the coastline were swiftly cleared by the UIP in collaboration with the eThekwini Parks Department. In total, 601 refuse bags were collected from the beaches and Promenade during October, highlighting the scale of effort required to maintain the areaβs cleanliness after adverse weather.

Grass cutting was completed throughout the precinct by the UIP team, with the Parks Department contributing scheduled maintenance at key sites like Durban View Park and Hawaan. Additional attention was also given to the M4 corridor, where two Servest staff and a dedicated forest cleaner removed 30 bags of rubbish and cleared all stormwater drains of debris, further supporting seasonal readiness.

The UIPβs bench replacement programme gained momentum, with 10 more wooden benches replaced with durable, recycled plastic alternatives. To date, 25 of the 50 benches identified for upgrade have been completed, with the remaining installations scheduled by January 2026.

As part of ongoing infrastructure maintenance, repairs to the control room roof on the Village Green also began in October and remain on track for completion by month-end.
With storm damage behind us and proactive maintenance efforts well underway, the UIP remains focused on ensuring uMhlanga is clean, safe, and festive-season ready for both residents and visitors alike.
