Proactive Planning – FESMAC Highlights

Cleaning, Greening and Maintenance, Community and Sustainability, Municipal Services

The festive season is a peak period for Umhlanga, with thousands of visitors enjoying the coastline, village amenities and public spaces. Through strong inter-agency collaboration and visible on-the-ground operations, eThekwini municipal teams helped ensure that Umhlanga remained a safe, well-managed and welcoming destination.

Enhanced Policing and Law Enforcement

Safety was a key focus over the festive period, with a substantial and visible law enforcement presence throughout Umhlanga. On New Year’s Eve in particular, SAPS, Metro Police, and Community Policing Forum (CPF) members worked together to manage crowds and maintain order.

The new 24/7 SAPS satellite station at Autumn Drive significantly strengthened policing capacity in the area. As a result of this proactive deployment, no criminal incidents were reported on New Year’s Eve, and only very few incidents occurred during the broader festive season.

More Metro Police officers, supported by the Metro Police satellite office at Village Green, and enhanced visibility were both a deterrent and a reassurance to the public. The close working relationship between CPF Street Captains and SAPS further strengthened community-based safety efforts, enabling rapid communication and response.

Well-Managed Beaches, Parks and Public Facilities

Umhlanga’s beaches and public spaces remained a major attraction throughout the festive season, supported by coordinated management and oversight. The Festive Season Management Committee (FESMAC), implemented from November 2025, provided structured coordination between relevant stakeholders.

Beach cleaning operations and upgrades to ablution facilities ensured a high standard of cleanliness and comfort for beachgoers. Seasonal lifeguards were deployed across key swimming areas, contributing to a safe coastal environment. There were no drownings reported during the festive season.

The presence of Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) inspectors along the Umhlanga coastline was both visible and effective, with regular patrols enhancing compliance and environmental protection.

All sewage blockages were addressed swiftly and resolved in record time, minimising disruption and restoring normal operations quickly, and Durban Solid Waste (DSW) provided a consistently high level of service and support throughout the festive season.

Electrical infrastructure also remained a core focus, with weekly audits conducted by the eThekwini Electrical Department. As of the end of January, 97% of promenade lights and 94% of street pole lights in the Village were fully operational.

The successful festive season in Umhlanga demonstrates how structured planning and ongoing coordination between key stakeholders contributed to a safe, well-managed and welcoming environment.
