Over 1,600 Bags of Refuse Removed

Cleaning, Greening and Maintenance

February was an active and productive month for UUIP Cleaning, Greening and Maintenance (CGM) operations within the uMhlanga Precinct.

1,500 Bags Removed from Beaches and Promenade

uMhlanga beaches remained open for the majority of February, with clean, welcoming conditions for residents and visitors. However, heavy rainfall later in the month significantly changed conditions, resulting in large volumes of debris and plastic washing up along the coastline. In response, cleaning operations were intensified immediately. Daily beach cleaning continues, led by eTM Parks and supported by UIP beach cleaning staff, and visible improvements are being made as the clean-up progresses.

Over the past month alone, approximately 1,500 refuse bags were removed from the beaches and promenade.

Additional Resources and 100 Bags Cleared from the M4

Additional resources were deployed to support broader precinct cleaning operations. An extra forest cleaner, together with two Servest staff members, focused on the M4 corridor, delivering highly successful clean-up results.

A total of 100 bags of rubbish were removed from the M4, and all drains in the area were cleared of debris to improve stormwater flow and reduce blockages during heavy rains.

Lighting Audit and Environmental Management

The UUIP continues its weekly light audits every Tuesday, with all findings logged to ensure faults are tracked and addressed efficiently.

An issue of rodent activity on the Village Green was addressed in collaboration with eThekwini Municipality’s rodent control. A coordinated plan between DSW Rodent Control and the UUIP has been implemented to curb infestation. Measures include daily rubble removal, improvements to bin areas and the introduction of structured pest control interventions.

All grassed areas within the precinct were cut by the UIP during February, ensuring open spaces remained neat and accessible. Municipal cutting is scheduled to take place during the first week of March.

Team Spirit in the Precinct

February also included a positive staff engagement moment, with a friendly soccer match between Marshall and Servest (with Servest securing a 4 – 3 victory!).

While February brought environmental challenges, proactive deployment, coordinated planning and daily operational focus ensured that public spaces remained clean, safe and well maintained.
