As the year-end holidays approach, the uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) has ramped up its efforts to ensure the precinct is clean, safe, and well-maintained for the influx of visitors and residents enjoying the summer season. From storm recovery to visual enhancements, November has been a month of focused activity.
900 Refuse Bags Removed from Beaches and Promenade
The UIP beach cleaning team, in collaboration with the eThekwini Parks Department, collected over 900 bags of litter from the beaches and promenade throughout November. This joint effort maintained the high standard of cleanliness expected in uMhlanga.
Following the storm on 23 November, debris washed onto the shoreline. Clean-up operations began immediately and continue to ensure the beaches are safe and inviting. Despite the storm, both main beaches remained open with positive water quality results.
M4 Corridor: 60 Bags Collected and Drains Cleared
Two Servest staff and a dedicated forest cleaner were deployed along the M4 corridor, contributing significantly to the month’s cleaning efforts. Their work resulted in 60 additional bags of litter being removed. All stormwater drains in this area were inspected and cleared to ensure effective runoff and prevent future blockages.
Forest Café Bin Area Revamp
A newly installed bin enclosure at the Forest Café has helped improve hygiene and aesthetic appeal in the area. The enclosed setup also helps prevent wildlife from accessing waste bins, reducing mess and protecting the surrounding forest environment.

Green Spaces in Top Shape for the Holidays
All grass areas across the precinct were cut by UIP teams, with further grass cutting completed by the Parks Department in early November. The result is a visibly well-kept precinct that reflects our commitment to environmental care during this high-traffic season.
Infrastructure Upgrades and Festive Readiness
A number of key infrastructure projects were completed during the month:
-
The UIP control room, damaged during a windstorm, was successfully replaced before the festive period began.

-
All street signage upgrades across the Village and surrounding roads were finalised by eThekwini Municipality.
-
Bollards were repainted as part of the precinct’s general upliftment efforts.

-
Helipad protection operations were carried out on Spalding to minimise the risk of debris fallout from the adjacent development.
With all these initiatives in place, the UIP is proud to present a refreshed and welcoming uMhlanga — ready for residents and visitors to enjoy throughout the festive season.
