Municipal services have played an important role in maintaining uMhlanga’s infrastructure and public spaces throughout February. From beach clean-ups and lighting repairs to increased law enforcement presence, here’s a look at the latest municipal efforts within the precinct.
Pump Stations Operating Well & Beach Clean-Ups
All pump stations in uMhlanga are currently functioning well, with only minimal blockages reported this month. However, the recent heavy rains have brought significant debris down the rivers, leading to plastic waste washing up along our beaches.
In response, Parks and UIP beach cleaning teams have been working daily to clear debris and ensure that our beaches remain open and enjoyable for residents and visitors. Their efforts have been instrumental in maintaining the cleanliness and accessibility of our coastline.
Lighting Maintenance & Infrastructure Support
Lighting maintenance continues to be a key focus, with the eThekwini Municipality’s Lights Department attending to Promenade and Lagoon Drive lights. An audit has been completed and forwarded to the Electrical Department for further action. Meanwhile, Coastal Engineering is still working on the Pier lights, and the UIP is monitoring progress to ensure this critical infrastructure is properly maintained.
Forest Protection & Learners Program Support
The Council’s Learners Program remains a valuable asset to the precinct, with six additional staff members assisting as forest guides. Their presence has been invaluable in protecting our green spaces, educating visitors, and enhancing conservation efforts within the precinct.
Metro Police to Establish a Presence on Village Green
In a significant development for local safety, Metro Police will soon be taking over the old Clinic Building on the Village Green. This transition, expected to be completed within the next two weeks, will help enhance law enforcement visibility and responsiveness within the area. The increased presence of Metro Police is a positive step towards improving safety, enforcing by-laws, and ensuring a secure environment for all.
