Our resident horticulturalist, Geoff Nichols, spotted a very lonely Clematis brachiata growing along the M4 just north of Sibaya.
Commonly known as Travellers Joy, this plant is usually found in the dry bushveld regions of KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape scrambling over boulder-strewn slopes or up trees. Bringing great joy and relief to the weary traveller, this handy plant can ease blisters if you pack fresh leaves into your shoes. By using the leaves to make tea, it’s also an effective treatment for headaches, coughs and colds, chest ailments and tummy troubles.
This is the only specimen which Geoff has discovered so near our coast and is setting a great example of social isolation. Even in its lonely state, it’s in full bloom and looking fantastic.
