July’s cleaning, greening and maintenance efforts in uMhlanga

Cleaning, Greening and Maintenance

The month of July has seen continued dedication from the uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) and the eThekwini Municipality in addressing the aftermath of the severe storm damage caused by the tornado that hit the KZN area on 3rd June. Our teams have been working diligently to ensure that uMhlanga remains safe, clean and inviting for residents and visitors alike.

Storm Damage Repairs Ongoing efforts have focused on clearing fallen trees and roof debris along the Promenade and Lagoon Drive. These areas have been carefully managed to ensure safe pathways for all, thanks to the collaboration between the eThekwini Municipality and UIP staff.

Beach Maintenance We are pleased to report that our beaches have remained open for the past four weeks, with consistently good water quality results. There was a brief two-day closure due to a major sewage spill at Saratoga Park caused by a pipe burst, but the situation was swiftly addressed. As a precautionary measure, daily inspections of stormwater outlets from Virginia to uMhlanga have been conducted to ensure continued safety and cleanliness. Additionally, Parks and UIP teams have been working together to clear the beaches of wood debris, repurposing it for dune rehabilitation.

Landscaping and Green Spaces All landscaping across the precinct has been meticulously attended to, with all grass areas, including those at Durban View Park, cut and maintained to our high standards. The green spaces in uMhlanga continue to thrive, providing a beautiful and welcoming environment for all.

Infrastructure Updates Earlier this month, the UIP successfully managed the repair of a sinkhole and reinstatement at the Pier, ensuring the safety and accessibility of this popular area. A new water leak at the Pier has also been reported, and we are working closely with the relevant authorities to address it promptly.

The collaborative efforts between the UIP, the eThekwini Municipality, and various contractors have been crucial in maintaining the safety and aesthetic appeal of uMhlanga during this challenging time. We remain committed to keeping our precinct in top condition and appreciate the continued support from our community.
