As uMhlanga prepares to welcome an influx of holidaymakers, a concerted effort by eThekwini Municipality and third-party service providers has helped ensure the precinct is clean, functional and ready for the festive season.
Sewage Spills and Pumpstation Monitoring
Over the past few weeks, two pumpstation failures and several minor sewage spills were reported across the precinct. Thanks to swift escalation and coordinated response efforts with eThekwiniβs Water and Sanitation teams, all incidents were contained with no long-term disruptions to public infrastructure or water quality. Ongoing monitoring continues as part of standard precautionary protocols.
Lighting Functionality Above 90% Across the Precinct
The eThekwini Electrical Department conducted regular weekly audits on street and promenade lighting throughout the month. Current functionality stands at 97% along the Promenade and 91% within the Village, contributing to improved night-time visibility and public safety.
900 Bags of Litter Removed from Beaches and Promenade
In joint operations between UIP beach cleaning teams and eThekwini Parks, a total of 900 refuse bags were removed from uMhlangaβs beaches and promenade during November. These efforts were crucial in maintaining the cleanliness of the precinct, particularly following the strong winds and heavy rainfall on 23 November, which caused significant debris to wash onto the shore.
Clean-up operations are ongoing, and the beaches have remained open throughout the month with consistently positive water quality results.
Public Green Spaces Well Maintained
Grass cutting and vegetation maintenance were completed by both UIP and Parks teams during early November, leaving green spaces across the precinct in excellent condition. These efforts form part of the broader goal to present a well-maintained and inviting public environment for the December holiday season.
Metro Police Prepared for Festive Season Rollout
Metro Police maintained a strong daytime presence in recent weeks, with a notable decrease in traffic-related offences reported. However, based on precinct feedback, an increase in night-time visibility has been recommended to further support safety during peak season.
From 29 November, Metro will implement a dedicated festive season operational plan, with a strong emphasis on by-law enforcement across high-traffic zones in uMhlanga.
Together, these efforts reflect a collaborative push to ensure that uMhlanga is safe, clean and ready for all who plan to enjoy the precinct this holiday season.
