Documenting Nature, One Click at a Time: Join the Great Southern BioBlitz 2025

Community and Sustainability

From 24–27 October 2025, uMhlanga will be part of the Great Southern BioBlitz—a global citizen science initiative that invites communities across the southern hemisphere to document and celebrate biodiversity.

This is your chance to get involved and explore the incredible flora and fauna that make the uMhlanga coastline and surrounding forest such a unique part of the KwaZulu-Natal landscape.

What’s It About?

The Great Southern BioBlitz (GSB) encourages participants to upload sightings of plants, animals, birds, insects, fungi and other living organisms using the iNaturalist app. Each observation becomes part of a growing global biodiversity database, assisting scientists, conservationists and researchers in better understanding our planet’s ecosystems.

Whether you’re walking the uMhlanga Promenade, wandering through the forest boardwalk trails, or relaxing in your own garden—you can contribute.

Why Your Participation Matters

  • Observations support science: Every sighting is shared to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).

  • Helps track species and habitat health: Conservation agencies and Red List teams use this data.

  • Contributes to global conservation: Highlights local biodiversity and supports global mapping of species ranges.

  • Supports learning: A useful resource for students, planners, and nature enthusiasts.

How to Get Involved

  1. Download the iNaturalist app (free on iOS and Android).

  2. Explore the area – walk the boardwalk, forest trails, or visit your garden.

  3. Take clear photos of plants, animals, birds, fungi, or insects.

  4. Upload sightings to the app between 24–27 October.
