CGM Progress: Grass Cutting, Beach Clean-Ups & Promenade Upkeep

Cleaning, Greening and Maintenance

With the combination of heavy rains and high temperatures this summer, maintaining uMhlangaโ€™s public spaces has been a top priority. The uMhlanga UIPs Cleaning, Greening & Maintenance (CGM) team alongside Parks, has been working tirelessly throughout February to manage excessive vegetation growth, clean up storm debris, and ensure the promenade and beach areas remain safe and accessible.

Grass Cutting & Landscaping Enhancements

Grass-cutting has been a key focus this month, with both UIP and Parks teams tackling rapid growth across the precinct. The wet and warm conditions have made upkeep challenging, but efforts remain ongoing to keep public spaces neat and visually appealing.

Additionally, our teams have been raising bedding and replanting vegetation, ensuring that green spaces are not only maintained but also revitalised for long-term sustainability.

Beach Clean-Ups & Promenade Maintenance

The recent heavy rains have washed large amounts of debris onto uMhlangaโ€™s beaches. To address this, UIP teams have been out daily, ensuring the shoreline remains clean and enjoyable for residents and visitors.

On the promenade, a Milkwood tree branch was stabilised to protect the iconic coastal flora while maintaining pedestrian safety along the walkway.

The UIP team also repaired minor water leaks in the precinct, sprouting due to loadshedding causing intermittent blockages.

Breakers Deck Reassessment & Future Plans

The Breakers Deck, which was damaged by fire four years ago, has been reassessed by coastal engineers. Plans for repairs are set to take place in the new financial year, with further updates to follow as work is scheduled.

Despite the challenges posed by seasonal conditions, the UIP remains committed to maintaining, enhancing, and protecting uMhlangaโ€™s public spaces. We appreciate the continued support of residents, businesses, and visitors in keeping our precinct safe, clean, and welcoming.
