September saw consistent efforts across infrastructure, safety, landscaping, and public realm readiness — with several positive indicators of progress.
Infrastructure Readiness Ahead of the Festive Season
In preparation for the holiday influx of visitors, the UIP team conducted a comprehensive walkabout with the Parks Manager and Aquatic Beach Superintendent. This exercise helped prioritise urgent infrastructure repairs and upgrades across public beach and park areas, ensuring that high-use spaces are well-prepared.
Weekly light audits continued to be conducted by the eThekwini Electrical Department, with Promenade lighting sitting at 97% functionality and Village street pole lights at 92%. These strong figures are a clear reflection of proactive municipal oversight and help ensure visibility and safety throughout the precinct.
Visible Law Enforcement
Throughout the month, Metro Police maintained a visible presence in the precinct, which appears to have had a meaningful impact. A reduction in traffic-related offences was noted — a promising sign as we approach peak travel months. While daytime enforcement remains strong, further night-time presence is still needed and remains a focus of ongoing engagement.
Landscaping Handover and Positive Growth
A major milestone this month was the official handover of Flamingo Lane’s vegetation areas from Council and Oceans to the Parks Department and UIP. This move ensures the area will benefit from structured and consistent care. The good news? Vegetation in the area is already showing healthy signs of establishment, a promising outcome for this previously neglected corridor.
Sewage Monitoring and Fast-Tracked Escalations
From an operational perspective, four pumpstation failures and several minor sewage spills were recorded during September. These incidents were primarily caused by rags obstructing the system — a recurring challenge. The UIP team responded swiftly, escalating each case to the relevant eThekwini Municipality departments for urgent intervention.
Beach Access and Cleanliness Maintained
Encouragingly, both main beaches remained open throughout the month, with no closures reported. Daily beach cleaning by the UIP and Parks Department teams continued, with 567 bags of refuse collected from beaches and the promenade during September. This effort has helped ensure a clean and enjoyable environment for both residents and visitors, with water quality results remaining positive throughout.
