Last weekend saw close on 150 surfers from 8 yrs to 60 yrs taking part in the Lizzard Hurricane KZN Champs at Bronze Beach Umhlanga. Hosted by Wave Wizards Surf Club and sanctioned by KZN Surfing, the 2-3 ft waves proved very contestable although tricky on finals day with the South Westerly showing up. Prize giving was held at the uMhlanga Ski Boat Club, where guests with a festive vibe adding to the awesome event.
In the Premier Open Ladies Division Heather Clark from Shelly Beach beat top La Lucia surfer Nicole Pallet by a narrow point, while Bryce Burness from Berea was the outright winner in the Open Men with a clear 4 point lead over Brandon Jackson, Chad du Toit and Dan Redman. Young Nate Colby won the prize for the highest wave score with a 9.5 out of a possible 10 ride, and surfer of the contest went to the well deserving Tide Lee Ireland for consistent high quality surfing. “This contest just gets bigger and better every year.
“It is known as the ‘fun’ competition and surfers really look forward to taking part, especially when the U10 kids take part with their parents”, said Anne Wright Surfing SA Board Member and Contest Director.
