Holiday prep: landscaping, tree removal, stormwater inspections and beach clean-ups

As the school holidays are now in full swing, the uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UUIP) team has been hard at work over the past two weeks to ensure that our precinct is ready for all residents and visitors to enjoy. With a focus on keeping our green spaces, beaches, and public areas clean and safe, here’s a look at the work that has been completed:

Landscaping and Parks Maintenance

Our teams have attended to all landscaping across the precinct, ensuring it’s up to standard. Grass areas, including Durban View Park, have been cut and maintained to keep our public spaces looking their best. Additionally, broken or fallen trees around the precinct have been cut and safely removed to ensure public safety and enhance the area’s aesthetics for the holiday season.

Stormwater Inspections and Beach Cleaning

Daily inspections of stormwater outlets from Virginia to uMhlanga have been conducted to ensure drainage systems remain clear and fully functional. This proactive measure helps reduce the risk of flooding as we move into the rainy season.

Beach cleaning efforts have also been ramped up due to high tides and strong winds. Our teams have been working diligently to maintain the cleanliness of our coastline, ensuring it remains a welcoming space for holiday visitors.

M4 Clean-Up and Safety Initiative

Our teams have also completed clean-ups along the M4, particularly in the area towards the Ohlanga River. This initiative is part of our effort to keep the area clean and prevent vagrants from occupying or sleeping under low vegetation, ensuring a safe environment for all.

Proactive Stormwater Drain Cleaning

In preparation for the holiday season and the approaching rainy season, we’ve continued with proactive cleaning of stormwater drains throughout uMhlanga Rocks. These efforts will help reduce the risk of flooding and maintain the functionality of our drainage systems.

Learners Programme Support

The Learners Programme from the Council, which has provided six additional staff members as forest guides, continues to run smoothly. These forest guides are contributing to our environmental efforts, helping to keep our natural spaces thriving during the busy holiday period.

As we enjoy the holidays, the UUIP team remains committed to ensuring that uMhlanga is a clean, safe, and beautiful destination for all. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our efforts.
