Fresh Cuts and Clear Paths: Keeping uMhlanga Trim and Tidy This May

Cleaning, Greening and Maintenance

As we head into the winter months, the uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) continues to ensure that our public spaces remain clean, safe, and visually appealing. During May, our teams – together with the eThekwini Municipality – focused on routine maintenance and several key improvement projects ahead of the June period.

Grassed Areas and Garden Refurbishments

All grassed areas within the precinct were cut and maintained by both the UIP and the eThekwini Parks Department. Our UIP teams also began garden refurbishments across various public spaces, including the cutting back of overgrown vegetation along the promenade to improve visibility and accessibility. These efforts not only enhance the appearance of the precinct but contribute to the overall safety of the area.

Promenade Upgrades and Water Mitigation

In response to consistent rainfall and fresh water runoff, the UIP proactively dug a trench along the paving of the promenade to divert water and reduce surface pooling. This intervention has helped maintain safe pedestrian access during wet conditions.

Additional upgrades on the promenade include the rollout of updated signage and ongoing maintenance of speed fencing outside Cabana Beach, where renovations to the new Surfriders restaurant are in progress.

Beach Management and Water Quality

Daily beach cleaning continued throughout May, with Parks and UIP teams working together to remove debris and maintain public access. Fortunately, sewage spills and pumpstation failures were minimal this month. However, Bronze Beach was temporarily closed for three days due to elevated E. coli levels. It has since reopened following clearance testing and water quality stabilisation.

We have also requested that members ensure the washing of bins follows regulatory practices to ensure our beaches remain clean and water quality of standard. Click here for more.

Several special projects across the precinct are being finalised as we move into June, aimed at keeping uMhlanga looking its best for both residents and visitors. These include improvements to landscaping, signage, and infrastructure – ensuring that our public spaces remain attractive, safe, and well-maintained year-round.
