The festive season is one of the busiest and most vibrant times of the year in Umhlanga, welcoming a significant increase in residents, visitors and holidaymakers. Over this period, the Umhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UUIP) intensified its cleaning, greening, maintenance and security operations to ensure that the village remained safe, welcoming and well-maintained throughout the holidays.
Enhanced Cleaning, Greening and Maintenance (CGM)
To meet the heightened demand during the festive season, the UUIP implemented an expanded cleaning strategy that delivered clear, visible results. The increased cleaning complement, supported by both day and night staff, led to a marked improvement in overall cleanliness across the precinct.
Additional, budgeted festive season staff were deployed to bolster existing teams, ensuring consistent coverage during peak periods. The deployment of 10 extra cleaners until the end of January, alongside 7 security officers covering 248 shifts over 45 days, made a significant impact, and the introduction of additional night-shift cleaners played a crucial role in relieving pressure on daytime staff, allowing teams to maintain high standards throughout the 24-hour cycle.
Over 1,000 refuse bags were removed over the past month. Both main beaches remained open, with consistently good water quality, and daily cleaning continued with support from Parks and UIP beach teams.

Proactive and Visible Security Presence
Security remained a key priority during the festive season, with the UUIP security team delivering effective, proactive and reliable support across the precinct.
A dedicated Tactical Unit was also introduced for the festive period, supported by an additional vehicle to enhance mobility and response times. As with cleaning operations, additional festive season security staff were deployed to reinforce the existing team.
A Collective Effort for a Positive Festive Experience
The combined efforts of enhanced cleaning, maintenance and security operations contributed significantly to a successful festive season in Umhlanga. Through careful planning, additional staffing and proactive deployment of resources, the UUIP was able to maintain a clean, safe and welcoming environment despite increased activity.
